Can a PCIe 4.0 riser cable properly output video from an RTX 5070 Ti (PCIe 5.0 GPU)?

Modified on Sun, Apr 27 at 12:11 PM

Issue Description:
The included PCIe Gen 4 riser card fails to output video from the RTX 5070 Ti. The issue persists even after swapping the GPU, but direct connection to the motherboard works fine. Notably, some users shared successful video output with the same GPU and Gen 4 riser card.

Technical Analysis:
The RTX 5070 Ti is a PCIe Gen 5-compliant GPU. From a professional standpoint:

  • Compatibility Limitation: PCIe Gen 4 risers do not guarantee proper functionality with Gen 5 GPUs.
  • Downgrade Test Results: Even when manually setting the motherboard BIOS to PCIe Gen 4 mode, the Gen 5 GPU may still fail to work via the Gen 4 riser.
  • Edge Case Note: While isolated instances of Gen 4 risers working with Gen 5 GPUs exist, this is not universally reliable and may introduce stability risks.

Recommended Solution:
To ensure optimal performance and system stability with the RTX 5070 Ti:

  • Use a PCIe Gen 5-certified riser cable/card
  • Avoid Gen 4 or older riser solutions

This is the only guaranteed method for correct operation and full bandwidth utilization.

(Note for DIY builders: Always verify riser cable specifications with your GPU/motherboard vendor.)
